Beauty and The Beast
One of our more challenging clients of recent months came in the guise of the owner of a high street retail outlet. Bradford Chamber/Kickstart contacted us as discussions between an originally appointed marketing provider and the client had broken down. We arranged a meeting and having been fully briefed decided we were equal to the challenges this job was likely to bring.
The main issues were that the rather eccentric proprietor was brimming with creative ideas, yet lacking in direction and only months (if not weeks) from bankruptcy. Our first meeting proved this to be the case, the beauticians was being used for dual purposes one income generating and the other more of a hobby/calling – all be it a hobby that had merits in terms of ambiance creation. The salon was being run by the owner who was the only member of staff and who also had grand ideas to develop other related concepts and roll them out elsewhere. All this was combined with very strict, though well founded ethical beliefs, which included a refusal to engage with every day technology, such as the internet or e-mail, believing both to be jointly “responsible for the breakdown of our ‘modern’ society”.
What mattered here was get a clear focus on what was profitable and thus key to success and to then develop marketing plans/strategy accordingly. After much discussion it was appreciated that without the business running properly, as a health & beauty salon, other goals would not be able to be achieved. Equally we could see that there was a need to work quickly in order to maintain the momentum of a client who was easily distracted and potentially facing closure, a particular challenge when e-mail contact was not possible.
After several meetings we managed to agree a name and artwork for an external sign, which was erected within 10 days of our initial meeting. We also encouraged the search for people, with complimentary talents, who may want to hire space in the salon and produced window posters to attract potential candidates. The next step was to work through and agree a campaign to attract more business from the local business community and produce appropriate materials to back this up.
It took just five weeks from our initial meeting to having the job completed, signed off and invoiced. During this time there were two new staff renting salon space and the promotional campaign was reaping dividends, without sacrificing any of the owners values.
Best of all we met up with the owner just before Christmas and all is going well. They are now making sufficient profits to enable more time to be given over to researching new projects and moving some earlier ideas forward too. It was equally very reassuring to meet up with someone who was grateful of our work and considerably less stressed than the person we had first met.
All of which goes to prove that for all our reliance on internet technology it is not essential to get the job done, working together however is.
Apologies for the lack of images here, as we’re sure you can appreciate to clearly identify this client could be seen by some as negative.
