Arts Awards – Jonny ‘The Lips’ presents…

We have always been proud of our commitment to worthy causes, which often involves us in interesting projects and, at times unexpected situations. A rather strange, as it turned out, request we received was when Jonathan was approach by Artsmix to present and compare their inaugural Emerging Artists Awards in Leeds. This grew from comparing and presenting the awards to Jonathan being filmed, with blacked out face and bright orange lipstick on, in the dark in a cellar in Oakwood, to then be projected on the plasma screens around the Electric Press on the evening. Mick may well be the artistic one, but Jonathan is now officially art!

Three judges Casey Orr, Andy Sames and Monair Hyman spent many hours examining a wide variety of artists work and after much deliberation finally produced a shortlist, for two different categories of award. The winners were Karen Dennis and Marianne Springham both of whom won a modest cash prize and, more importantly, support to stage a personal exhibition to further promote their work. The exhibitions will take place in Leeds in February 2008, please check the Mosaic Website www.artsmix.co.uk for more information.

The evening, which was attended by over 200 delegates from local businesses, was also an opportunity to view and buy some of the fantastic art work currently being created by emerging artists from across the city. Performers added to the great atmosphere with Urban Angels providing waitresses on stilts, ‘Ramtin’ Mageed Montazemy playing classical guitar, Holly Spencer Fire Juggling, Fashion Show from Ketchup and Cai Nyahoe and Kit Beaumont producing an original take on ‘comparing’ with an animated film, guest starring a key supporter of ours, Jonathan Smith from CSCommunicate, who also presented the awards.

The evening was also a chance to celebrate Artsmix’s journey since incorporation in 2002. Artsmix’s vision is to provide a platform for emerging artists and to provide qualitative opportunities for visual artists and performers to promote themselves. Amongst other events Artsmix hosts the Mosaic Arts and Crafts Market in Leeds on the second Sunday of each month and we warmly invite you to visit us and see the wealth and diversity of Art available.

So if you’ve any strange requests that you think we may be able to help with feel welcome to get in touch – it’s rare we say no, though (contrary to popular belief) Jonathan is happier to take on projects that don’t involve wearing lipstick! Maybe orange just isn’t his colour?
